![]() But since their widespread adoption, cell phones have taken on a different relation to the domestic: not as an infiltrator of, but a participant in, that intimacy. Nor did variations on these concerns ultimately prevent the adoption of cell phones. Of course, such fears did not halt the spread of telephone wires across the country. Through these rituals, our phones cease to be distant, technical objects In the March 2, 1887, edition of the Chicago Daily Tribune, an article describes - and, I think, parodies - a mother who is afraid to call a home where someone has scarlet fever, as she is “sure that there would be great danger of infection over the wire.” In newspaper articles of the 1870s and ’80s, featuring such optimistic titles as “The New Terror” and “An Electrical Outrage,” commentators speculated that homes with telephones would soon become sites of “enormous danger,” their residents “bared to the least vibrations of the roaring world.” In one such article, the author imagines a mother with a baby in her arms sustaining “fatal injuries” after hearing a violent political polemic over the phone. Such concerns about the sanctity and intactness of the domestic sphere abound in early discourse about the telephone. Whereas Tesla focused on the potential for heightened - or, literally, extended - human connection, Haselden illustrates a world where pocket telephones, “the latest modern horror,” alienate us from our immediate embodied circumstances and disrupt precious moments of domestic intimacy. It depicts a harried gentleman disturbed at the most inopportune moments by his “pocket telephone,” which rings while he is at a concert with a date, while he is being handed a crying baby, and while he is escorting his bride down the aisle. Haselden published his own prophetic comic in the Daily Mirror. □ 20.Seven years before Nikola Tesla imagined (in a 1926 interview with Collier’s) a future in which wireless connection would allow us to “see and hear one another as though we were face to face” with “instruments … fit in our vest pockets,” the British cartoonist W.K. ![]() ![]() Thankfully, modern deep freezers only use 218 kWh on average. Twenty years ago, deep freezers used upwards of 800 kWh per year. ![]() Just like any household appliance, you want your deep freezer to be as energy efficient as possible. Let’s discuss these features that you will want to take into account when picking out the right freezer for you! Energy Usage You want to think about energy usage, defrost methods, space, and other key features. There is more to consider than just choosing upright or chest. How often you open/close it will also be a factor. Pro Tip: Keep in mind that any freezer stored in a garage during summer months will typically have a shorter lifespan because it will work overtime to fight the extreme temperatures. It is more difficult to see what is being stored (not ideal if you aren’t an organized person).Cleaning is not as easy when you must reach into the chest to scrub it.Requires bending over to reach items at the bottom (if you’re short, invest in a stool!).Air does not circulate as much in chest freezers, preventing freezer burn better than an upright, which allows you to store food for longer periods of time.Chest freezers often run quieter and are more affordable than their upright counterparts. Its design tends to be more energy efficient than an upright freezer because the heavy lid that keeps the airtight seal in place.Depending on the size, chest freezers can have more cubic storage capacity than an upright. It can be hard to store oddly shaped or larger foods. In the event of a power outage, food can spoil more quickly because the door seal lets cold air out.An upright requires less floor space than a chest freezer. They tend to be easier to clean than a chest freezer.Uprights can be easier to organize, store, and access food than a chest freezer. Both upright and chest freezers have their advantages and disadvantages based on your needs. One of the biggest choices regarding deep freezers is deciding on an upright or chest freezer. There’s a lot that goes into choosing the right kind of deep freezer, so let’s get to it! Upright vs. A deep freezer is either an upright or chest-shaped freezer that can be stored in a garage or somewhere you have extra space. Deep freezers are great for buying food in bulk and meal prepping. What is a deep freezer? The purpose of a deep freezer is to keep larger amounts of food frozen for longer periods of time without freezer burn and other issues that occur in regular household freezers. ![]() ![]() So before we talk about this book, we need to talk a bit first about the subject of "transcendental" meditation.Īs regular readers know, I've been meditating daily now for around two years, in my case a very atheistic, Western-friendly style of meditation in which you concentrate on your breathing (also known by the even more Western-friendly term "mindfulness," and the basis behind Western medicine's "Mindfulness Stress Reduction Therapy") and that's made me more curious than ever about another type of meditation known as "transcendental" (or "TM" for short), which I first became fascinated with in the '80s when I first became a fan of filmmaker David Lynch, and learned that many of the surrealist images that feature in his films come straight from his work in this type of mental practice. Maybe there was more solid information in the 25% of the book I didn't read, but most of this tome consists of the 3rd-party close ("Everybody's doing it! Don't you want to do it, too?") But I wanted a book to educate me, not to serve as a cheerleader. To summarize, I believe TM is beneficial. Wishful thinking: If I meditated for 10 years and, during that time, landed the man of my dreams/won the lottery/found my dream career, I might assume the reason was TM, but it doesn't make it true. If people meditate for a lot of years, and during that time, they experience some of the benefits of aging, like a less reactive "fight or flight" response, is it TM or the benefit of aging? How would you know?Ĭ. Just because Jerry Seinfeld (I'm a fan) has meditated for 40 years doesn't mean meditation is the reason he became a famous and successful comic.ī. No doubt this is helpful, but it's also very expensive. The author is too enthusiastic in promoting the "necessity" of signing on with a certified TM coach. Except for the MRI/brain activity studies, I didn't find it especially convincing. He and his work have been featured on Good Morning America, The Today Show, NPR and other national media.Īlthough I absolutely believe in the value of meditation, this book was pretty unsatisfying. For the sound of those two syllables in itself conveys no true knowledge of His nature but yet all who know the Latin tongue are led, when that sound reaches their ears, to think of a nature supreme in excellence and eternal in existence. For on this principle it is that He is called Deus (God). And yet God, although nothing worthy of His greatness can be said of Him, has condescended to accept the worship of men’s mouths, and has desired us through the medium of our own words to rejoice in His praise. And this opposition of words is rather to be avoided by silence than to be explained away by speech. Thus there arises a curious contradiction of words, because if the unspeakable is what cannot be spoken of, it is not unspeakable if it can be called unspeakable. And so God is not even to be called “unspeakable,” because to say even this is to speak of Him. How do I know this, except from the fact that God is unspeakable? But what I have said, if it had been unspeakable, could not have been spoken. Have I spoken of God, or uttered His praise, in any worthy way? Nay, I feel that I have done nothing more than desire to speak and if I have said anything, it is not what I desired to say. Or is the signified of a signifier actually our own false mental image of God, and Godinhimself is something more distant?Īugustine feels this, and we’ll leave this post here confronting the vast mystery of the divine: However, for St Augustine’s argument about signa and how they work, God is a res - he is the signified of a signifier. God is not a thing inasmuch as God is not a being among beings. Not being deep into scholasticism, I won’t judge the accuracy of that. God is being itself (FYI: St Augustine agrees, see De Trin 5) - ipsum esse. As people who think that Thomas Aquinas is the height of theological awesomeness like to point out, God is not even a being. This student even has a copy of a book called God Is No Thing, after all. One of my students expressed his surprise at Augustine having included God amongst the res. At a certain level, all res may even be seen as signa that point us to God, depending on how you look at it.Īnd the ultimate signum that shows us the way to God is the incarnate God Himself, the perfect signum for the res that God is. All other res exist for the purpose of being used to help us enjoy God more. Ultimately, in Augustine’s view, God is the only res that we are to enjoy. To represent these oral signa, we have invented writing, itself a further system of signa that represent the res that are the signa of spoken words.Īugustine then goes into a discussion of how all res can either be enjoyed ( frui) or used ( uti). Language is made up of oral signa that disappear as soon as they come into existence. All signa are res, but not all res are signa. Others are human conventions, such as language. Some signa are natural, like smoke being the signum for the res that is a fire. His basic approach to language is that it is part of the wider universe of signs, or signa, all of which point to things, or res. In De Doctrina, St Augustine deals with the important question of language (for how can we read and interpret Scripture without thinking about what it actually is?). A few weeks ago I had the delightful opportunity of teaching my excellent group of students at Davenant Hall De Doctrina Christiana by St Augustine, or On Christian Teaching. ![]() |
